DAedThose times are gone now.
Lately I realised good old DeviantART is dead, or maybe I should say DAed. I lost what I valued the most on DA: FEEDBACK.
I think the day DA died was the day they allowed thumb-collecting. In my opinion it's the main cause.
Before thumb-collecting you have had to actually VIEW people's pictures. DA was about sharing ART, sharing feedback, DA helped to learn and improve. People surfed through other's galleries, mostly full-viewing their works. Some of them were leaving precious comments- a priceless critiqe. Every fav you got guaranteed that someone actully SEEN your work, and probably liked it. Through the chat channel #thumbsshare people shared their work, and viewed work of other's. Favs was a real measure of how "good" (in other's eyes) your works are. Comments was a real way to see your own art with other's point of view.
Nowadays DA is about two things: popularity and uploading pictures. That's it. Some freaky twisted hybrid of myspace and imageshack. People massively collect/fav thumbs from front page, only to get overload of pageviews. I pity the people that have like 10-50 deviations (usually some poor pics of "My cat" or "Me and Trinny at the party" or other bullshit) and over 100 000 of pageviews. What do they gain from it? Improvement? Art feedback? Nope. Only a tickle of vanity, virtual ilussion they're popular. Nowadays favs are a measure of how many seconds your work was on the front page. Comments are almost completely gone, cause only a tiny fraction of users actually will full-view your work. Even Thumsshare kinda cooled down.
I remember how some of the admins exclaimed that DA is ALL about ART and it's like a last stronghold of art. Now it smells like a well cooked propaganda with a nice portion of income sauce. DA became popular thus generating major user traffic- perfect situation to get a lot of money. Have You ever wondered why lately DA is so persistently overpelting you with more and more advertisement? Yep, it's all about the Ka-ching thing.
I will probably stay here, on DA (well after all I made some friends here). I'll keep uploading old and new photos. But I won't reply for favs, I refuse to feed The Vanity Machine with my own time and attention.
In the same time I'll look for some "art sharing website" that will provide me with a feedback. I need to improve and without feedback I don't have spirit to think, to imagine, to CREATE.
